Merry-Lynn Bares Soul On New Single “Runaway”

On her new single Runaway, rising singer Merry-Lynn invites listeners in to let them know how she keeps people out. Trust, or the lack of, is the central theme of this soulful, slow-burning song, as Merry-Lynn’s incisive lyricism paints a picture that many young people will be able to relate to.

Inspired by her experiences with people in general, the singer is no longer phased by the dishonest actions of others. Over a deep, reggae inflected groove produced by creative polymath Veen, she croons about how she’s “used to this” treatment from people who would get her to open up, only to change at the last moment. Now she opens up on her own terms, over skittering drums and an infectious bassline, tackling feelings that many of her listeners can relate to.

Merry-Lynn’s dulcet tones and lyrical prowess shine radiantly here and it is clear why her growing fanbase clings to her every word. With a new EP on the way the young singer continues to carve out her own lane, refusing to let the words or actions of others distract her from her journey.

Runaway is available on all streaming platforms now.

About Merry-Lynn

For rising Nigerian singer Merry-Lynn, sharing her raw emotions isn’t something to shy away from but rather a form of catharsis, with her music acting as the canvas with which she translates her feelings to the world. Born Iyere-Eke Merrylynn Ehinomen in Abuja, artists like Erykah Badu, Amy Winehouse, Asa, and Sade played an influential role in her life and sound as she grew up. It wasn’t until secondary school where thoughts of being an actual performer began creeping into her head, inspired by time spent in the choir. She spent time writing songs in her bedroom, taking the time to develop her craft. She was able to hone her voice and learn more about performance as a member of a girl group known as the Mercy Singers during her last two years of secondary school. In her first year at Federal University Of Technology Owerri, a chance meeting with brothers Veen and Kiienka, both rising producers and rappers, would be the spark she needed to fully embark on her journey as a singer. They would be her guiding forces for the release of her first single Silver Surfer in 2015.

Her debut EP Petrichor a rrived in 2019, a sultry blend of soul, jazz, reggae and RnB. The EP showcased her lyrical prowess and musical ability as she looked inwards, drawing upon anger, hurt, love, and heartbreak to create a debut project that sounds beyond its years. The soulfulness and rich tones of her voice still stand out, grabbing attention by nature of it’s warm uniqueness. Produced solely by Veen, Petrichor was well received with Merry-Lynn receiving features on OkayAfrica and Beats 1 Radio. Selected as one of Audiomack’s Rising Stars, the years honing her musical craft in her bedroom paid off as the world began paying attention to what she had to say.
