Show Dem Camp and The Cavemen Unite for ‘No Love in Lagos’, Bridging Highlife and Hip-Hop

On their collaborative album No Love in Lagos, Show Dem Camp’s Ghost and Tec team up with The Cavemen (brothers Benjamin James and Kingsley Okorie) to push the boundaries of African music. Known for their unique “palmwine sound,” Show Dem Camp weave their hip-hop roots with the traditional highlife style championed by The Cavemen. The celebrated guitarist Nsikak David and prolific producer Spax help drive this ambitious project forward.

Released in 2024, No Love in Lagos is more than just a collection of songs—it’s an exploration of the possibilities of African hip-hop, influenced by Nigerian sounds. “A lot of times, [in Africa] we lean on popular sounds from the West,” says Show Dem Camp’s Tec in an interview. “As Show Dem Camp, we’re Nigerian rappers, [and so] our influences are closer to home.”

From the reflective and personal Blessings to the energetic OMFTR, the project intertwines the storytelling traditions of hip-hop with the culturally significant highlife genre. In addition to this unique sound, the album places Lagos itself as a key element, representing both the highs and heartaches of life in the bustling city. No Love in Lagos captures the essence of a vibrant metropolis while introducing a new dimension to African music.
