Why Is #BBNaija So Popular?

As the sixth season gets set to take the center stage later in the year, the Reunion Show scheduled to begin on Thursday, June 17, 2021 promises to be filled with drama as all 20 of the Lockdown housemates meet once again and get the opportunity to clear the air and express their real feelings towards each other.

If you keep wondering why #BBNaija keeps dominating your timelines and Twitter trends whenever it airs then here is why millions watch the show.

D for Drama: I watch the show for the drama because, to be honest for an active introvert I have close to zero drama in my life. But everyone needs a healthy dose of drama in their life and that’s where football (Premier League) which ends today July 26 comes in. Big Brother replaces that and that’s why Multichoice and DStv strategically place it at the end of the league to get us to keep paying for a subscription.

New Music: I listen to podcasts more than music and audiobooks these days. When I use to work actively in the radio/music industry. I listened to loads of music by clients because I wanted to understand who they were, what they were thinking, and where and who those types of songs belonged to so I know how we can push it. When you watch Big Brother especially Saturday night’s in-house club show, you discover loads of sounds from mostly Nigeria. And if you have Shazam, you can add a few to your playlist.

Cloth Talk: Last season’s winner Mercy and Teddy A set the bar so high with her fits and you can see that being replicated by current housemates like Nengi and Prince. Mercy brought over 100 pieces of fits for her 71 days stay in the house and never repeated a look during her stay in the house. Nengi is on the same path now, Prince who is a real-life Prince, and current Mr. Nigeria came to the house custom-made. Honorable mention to Neo for his colorful socks.

Africa’s Next Influencers: Not everyone who makes it into the house ends up becoming a big deal when they graduate, but there’s no way none of the 20 housemates will vanish into thin air after 21 days. Not less than three will influence conversations and dominate the news long after they leave the house. Shouts to Tasha, Bisola, Mercy, Laycon, and Erica. I did some work with Bisola through Temple Music when she released her ‘Controlla’ song.

Untold Stories: I have been to a few places around the continent and every country is different. We use to get a lot of great stories when it was Big Brother Africa but every season bring Nigerians with experiences from different parts of the world coming to represent the different shades of the Green White Green. Case in point, Khafi from last season, was a policewoman in the UK but took some time off to come to partake, Mike owns the first black-owned cigar line from the UK and married a UK Olympian. Wathoni from the recent season is half Kenyan. Kidwaya paid half a million Naira to travel by road from Abuja to audition and he flew on a private jet to Lagos to quarantine for this season. Seyi was a descendant of Obafemi Awolowo – who is featured on 100 Naira banknote.
