DJ Maphorisa Urges Nigerian Djs To Cut Down The Amapiano Tempo

As one of the first pioneers of Amapiano, DJ Maphorisa has stirred controversy by pushing Nigerian producers to reduce the beats per minute (BPM) in their Amapiano compositions.

During a recent Instagram live video, Maphorisa, who is regarded as one of the genre’s main inspirations, expressed his opinion that the slower tempo is essential to the authentic amapiano sound.

Please…. play amapiano softer… you can’t be playing amapiano at 120 BPM” he explained. “They’ll be playing amapiano like they’re playing hip hop… play it at 113, 114, 115 BPM.”

While amapiano has gained popularity throughout Africa and beyond, variations have evolved, with some Nigerian producers including quicker tempos into their versions. Maphorisa’s comments serve as a gentle prod, encouraging them to stay true to the genre’s roots.

It remains to be seen whether Nigerian producers would respond to Maphorisa’s plea. However, his impact is evident, and his opinions will undoubtedly add to the richness of Amapiano’s global tour.
